my thoughts

There are many issues people can take a firm stance on without having second thoughts or questioning their convictions. I’m a firm believer in many things. However, one issue in particular has recently fallen into a grey area, so to speak. Abortion is, in itself, a huge question Americans can have two completely different answers to. I used to believe it was outright wrong. I couldn’t put my head around somebody “killing a baby”. It didn’t seem natural to me, but to understand the problem I had to understand more than that.

Opponents of abortion often go as far as calling it “murder”. All this controversy is based on morals, of course, and is not set in stone. I have lately had a change of heart, if you will, and don’t see it that way at all. The first question is “what constitutes as a baby?” This is probably where most of the controversy lies. Some people say birth, other say conception, and everything in between. I honestly cannot distinguish the difference between abortion or any other form of contraception such as a condom or Plan B. Unless there are strict guidelines for this I fear the issue will continue to stagnate. Also, I am a guy. This particular issue, if you think about it, only directly affects women. Why should men have the right to decide? I don’t believe it is in our place to do so.

A woman considers abortion for many reasons. If you put yourself in her shoes maybe it will give you more insight into the issue. The classic example is the rape victim. If you’re an abortion opponent what would you tell her? It’s easy to come up with an answer now but what if you were her? What about the woman who is not in an situation ideal for raising or providing for a child? This is often seen as a weak argument but wouldn’t you wish your child a privileged existence?

I will say again, I’m not a woman and don’t presume to know everything about abortion. There are definitely many grey areas not only in my belief, but in the issue itself. I could type something just as long stating reasons against it, but I digress. I can honestly say I don’t know what to think. Both sides definitely have a solid case and right now, I could swing either way on the issue.

  1. You are incredibly brave to post your thoughts on such a controversial issue. I applaud your ability to think critically on the issue, as you say both sides have their cases. I hope your topic does not generate a pro-life v. pro-choice war. LOL I had offended people with a Dr. Suess quote I had used. I wish you luck.
